The used boat returns new thanks to a growing trend in nautical sector: the guaranteed refit. This phenomenon, which is spreading significantly, allows those who buy a used boat to obtain an almost new product, with official guarantees and updated technologies. The market for used boats, which represents about 80% of annual sales, is becoming an accessible and safe alternative to new enthusiasts, thanks to initiatives such as the Beneteau Neo program and other similar solutions from historic sites such as Dufour and Fountaine Pajot.
The guaranteed refit: an evolution of the nautical market
The concept of guaranteed refit is inspired by what happens in the automotive and real estate sector, where the used refurbished and certified has become a consolidated practice. In the nautical, the process previews that the yards, or specialized dealers, destroy used boats, putting them under conditions equal to the new with technological upgrades and guaranteeing a period of validity. The Beneteau Neo programme is an example of this evolution: boats are withdrawn, subject to strict controls and certified refitting, and placed on the market with direct guarantees of the mother's home.
The refit includes the replacement of motorization, the upgrade of the armo and the main plants, the restoration of the interior and the famine, and the guarantee of two years. This type of intervention not only improves the safety and performance of the boat, but also offers an alternative accessible to those who cannot afford a new boat. In Italy, initiatives such as NSS’s initial Second Hand offer a similar alternative, with a one-year guarantee for monohulls and multi-hulls.
A concrete case: the Oceanis 46.1
A concrete example is the recently released Oceanis 46.1, which can be converted into a “new” boat thanks to the Neo program. The refit includes the replacement of motorization, the upgrade of the armo and the main plants, the restoration of the interior and the famine, and the guarantee of two years. The initial cost starts from 37,500 euros, with a package that includes over 200 certified controls. Despite the guaranteed refit is a complete solution, there are also custom options, such as conversion from 4 to 3 cabins on catamarans, which takes about 13.500 euros. Historic sites such as Dufour and Fountaine Pajot have implemented similar solutions, setting up their international network of over 150 distributors to create a global brokerage platform, but with local assistance.
The guaranteed refit trend not only increases the accessibility to sailing boats, but also the confidence of consumers in the used market. With an ever more complete and certified offer, the nautical sector is adapting to new needs, offering solutions that meet both new enthusiasts and owners of used boats. The market, which was once seen as a second choice alternative, is becoming a prominent option, thanks to initiatives that guarantee quality, security and access to modern technologies.
