Vision 484, a catamaran designed for long navigation

An ex novo project for long distance navigation

The South African construction site Vision Yachts has developed the Vision 484, a catamaran designed ex novo to meet the needs of those who carry out long navigation. With a length out of everything (LOA) of 14.75 meters and a maximum width of 8,00 meters, the model optimizes volumes without compromising hydrodynamic efficiency. The empty displacement is at 12.7 tons, while the maximum useful reach reaches 4.3 tons, bringing the displacement to full load to 17 tons. This load capacity is a critical parameter for prolonged cruise catamarans designed to accommodate supplies, safety equipment and water reserves without compromising performance.

The former design is the strength of Vision 484. This is not a simple stretching operation of existing lines, but a project developed from scratch, designed to meet the needs of those who make long navigation. The construction site has consolidated its position in the high-speed multiscafi market with the development of Vision 484, a 48-foot catamaran designed ex novo compared to the previous and lucky model 444.

Construction and materials for superior durability

The construction philosophy of the construction site of Knysna favours long-term structural reliability. The hulls, bridge and bulkheads are made by vacuum infusion with epoxy resins and a closed-cell foam core. Unlike polyester laminates, the use of the epoxy matrix eliminates the need to apply subsequent barrier treatments against osmosis, ensuring superior native protection. Under the floor, each hull is divided into 18 independent ponds, a compartment aimed at circumscribing any water infiltration in case of local damage. Prodiere sections are designed to absorb shocks without compromising the main structure. Moreover, the prodiere sections integrate a shock absorption zone structured on two levels (crumple zones), designed to gradually deform and safeguard the backward main structures in case of impact with semi-submerged objects.

Speed and safety at sea

The total area of bolina (randa più fiocco) is 130 square meters, subdivided between a frog fenced by 87.1 square meters and a self-winding bow from 42,9 square meters. It is also planned to install a 120% genoa and dedicated carrier sails. In fact, the bompress adopts a system with double walls (dual tack lines), a technical solution that allows to pre-infer and arm a second carrier sail (such as a Code Zero or a gennaker) without the need to continuously go ahead during the gear shifts of the sails, improving the operational safety of the reduced crew. The deck layout includes clear paths, protected passers and wired ports, with all current manoeuvres postponed to the control stations. This organization contributes to easier and safer management of operations at sea, even with reduced crews.

Interior and comfort for long crossings

The interiors are offered in two main configurations: the shipowning version with 3 cabins, characterized by a shipowning suite that occupies the entire left hull, while the right hull houses two guest cabins and two bathrooms. The 4 cabin version symmetrics the spaces to accommodate numerous crews or for charter use. From a functional point of view, the project pays attention to the maintenance and viability of ocean transfers.

A workshop dedicated to the work bench is integrated into the straight hull, while access to the motors (two units Nanni from 50 horses) and primary systems has been designed to allow quick inspections and interventions without having to disassemble parts of the interior furniture. With a constant internal height of 2.1 meters, the living room and kitchen offer generous volumes, integrating an internal control station oriented towards the road monitoring during night shifts or in adverse weather conditions. The interior design is designed to ensure comfort and functionality during long crossings. The combination of generous spaces and dedicated equipment makes Vision 484 an ideal option for those looking for a versatile and reliable catamaran for extended trips.
