Build a route log
For each stage note:
- competent maritime authority;
- relevant orders and date of consultation;
- Notices to applicable Navigators;
- rules of the park or the protected area;
- port or field planned;
- alternative and conditions that impose their use.
The log can be digital, but an essential offline copy is valuable. Documents must be appointed with location and date, avoiding a full folder of indistinguishable PDFs.
Check what changes between one island and another
Access, transit, anchorage, mooring, fishing and diving do not necessarily follow the same discipline everywhere. Some activities may require permission or be limited in certain areas. The ports also apply different operating procedures.
Before leaving a stop, update the information on the next one. This progressive control is more reliable than a collection made weeks before, especially during the summer.
The role of the commander
The formal conformity does not exhaust the duty of caution. If wind, wave, visibility, crowding or crew status make a stop at risk, change it. Ordinances and warnings define known constraints and dangers; the final decision must consider the real situation.
