A hook that “looks closed” can have the gate braked by the salt, a left wreath in half, the deformed body or a line that presses right on the lever. Even an open S-hook, a worn sister clip and a serial becket can stay mounted until a tear changes the angle. The diagnosis does not start from the applied force, but from the original function and geometry. The Ronstan families offer distinct references for carabiner, S-hook, sister clip and eye or fork becket: identifying them allows you to read the signs without inventing a spare.
The point is downloaded and segregated before the test
It removes tension with an appropriate alternative and prevents the use of the attack. You do not open a gate under load or hold a sister clip with your fingers while another person stretches the top. Manual checks only take place without energy. If the component is associated with people, lifting or regulated functions, specific procedures and devices intervene; a nautical accessory is not promoted to a similarly certified device. The initial photo retains position, direction and traces before cleaning.
The gate must close by itself along the whole race
On a non-blocking carabiner slowly opens the gate and lets it come back several times, observing resistance, alignment and contact with the nose. An incomplete return does not correct by pulling the lever over the course. We look for sand, crystals, deformation and interference of the fixed line. The body is not clamped in clamp to straighten it. If the gate remains hard after a compatible cleaning or shows abnormal play, the carabiner is withdrawn from the service and replaced according to code.

The fixed line can prevent closing without being obvious
Ronstan describes eyes closed or covered by ferrula to hold the fixed head in the carabiners. Node, scaling or sheath must stay in that place. If they migrate to the gate, they can press on the lever or prevent return. It moves the exhaust system line and looks at the entire race, without limiting itself to the position in which it was found. An added strip, a protruding seam or a more voluminous terminal of the previous can be the cause of the intermittent closure.
The threaded need to turn free but without suspicious game
The 100mm Ronstan carbine with threaded sleeve adds a lock to the gate. They control thread, cleanliness, deformations and ability to reach the planned location without improvised tools. A half-blocking wreath is not forced with pliers, because you can mark the surface or mask a damaged thread. It also happens that the gate closes before the action of the wreath. If the parts do not work in the correct sequence, the component remains out of service.
The declared measure helps to recognize the replacement
The Ronstan non-blocking carabiners are available in lengths 60, 80 and 100 mm; the 100 version with a wrench has quotas A 13, B 14, C 100 and D 10. Weights and geometries differ. A larger spare can touch the blanket or change the orientation, while a smaller one can not accommodate the terminal. During the diagnosis you register the code and compare the table, without choosing from the only external encumbrance. The replacement must also restore the fixed eye.

An open S-hook does not close by bending it
S-hook was born with two open curvatures. If a tip appears wider, the bar is cake or the two seats are not symmetries than the table, the piece may have suffered side load or bump. Straighten it again modifies the material without explaining the cause. They replace and analyze orientation and terminals. Ronstan proposes bars of 4,8, 6, 8 and 9.5 mm with different lengths; the comparison should be done with the correct model, not with another size found on board.
Polishing shows where the terminal worked
A bright area in the curve is consistent with the support; a sign near the tip or gate indicates that the load has migrated. It documents the position before polishing or cleaning. The cause can be a too large line, too tight ring, hook rotation or voltage loss that allows the jump terminal. Replace the piece without changing the geometry reproduces the defect. The manoeuvre is observed in extreme positions with safe procedures and without people in the loading plane.
The sister clip must be a pair of the same size
Ronstan offers sister clip from 24, 37 and 58 mm. Two almost equal parts can only be coupled partially. Exhaust system clips are separated, codes and quotas are identified and deformation, edges and contact zone are checked. The 24-size version is A 7, B 27 and C 24; 58 A 15, B 60 and C 58. Mix sizes or shapes is excluded. The spare is a compatible pair, not half of uncertain origin.

Becket is diagnosed with traveller
RF1050 and the fork becket from 5 mm are indicated for traveller Series 14 and 19; RF1051 and the fork from 6 for Series 22, 26 and 30. If the becket is playing, no larger pin or a random washer is inserted. You identify the cart, you measure the hole and compare the code. A 5 component in a 6 series can appear mountable but work with game. Also the historical replacement of the cart is considered, because the becket may not be the original one.

Eye and fork produce recognizable wears
In the eye becket you look for ovalization and concentrated contact of the ring. In the fork becket you control cheeks, pin, hole and deemed. A polished cheek inside can indicate terminal outside center; a pin marked on one side reveals bending or misalignment. It does not widen the fork to let a terminal enter and the thicknesses do not move. The damaged component is replaced according to the series, while correcting the interface that generated the contact.
The pin must be retained with the expected system
A migrating pin can create game before leaving. It occurs the deemed without improvising wire, plugs or adhesives not foreseen. The hole does not have to have a bave or ovalization and the pin must cross the cheeks without being used as a lever to realline them. If it is considered missing, the full code is reconstructed. A pin apparently of the right size but with different head or locking system can interfere with traveller or not stay in the seat.

Salt can block a gate without obvious corrosion
Crystals and deposits in the hinges change the return before deep signs appear. Rinse and clean with methods compatible with stainless steel 316 and with any non-metallic parts, then dry and try again to exhaust system. Random lubricants do not apply or are contrary to the manufacturer's instructions. If the movement does not return uniform, the carabiner is replaced. Maintenance is made more frequent if the location holds water or sprays.
A stain should not be covered before identifying it
Surface ferrous storage, contamination and pitting do not have the same meaning. You photograph the stain, clean without removing material and you look at the surface. Under the gate, between the sister clips and the holes of the beckets can exist zones little visible. Section loss, clique, localized corrosion or uncertain origin lead to the removal of the piece. The fact that the family is described in 316 does not eliminate the need for drainage, rinsing and separation from incompatible materials.

Side contact on the gate should be eliminated, not padded
If a top or edge presses on the lever, a soft sheath can hide the problem without changing the trajectory. The diagnosis reconstructs the development of the component during rotation and loss of tension. Changes location, terminal or type of attack to keep the gate free. A clamp that prevents opening can also prevent complete closure and inspection. The criterion is an intrinsically free geometry, not an added block around a non-blocking component.
The replacement must retain the original function
A carabiner with a wreath does not automatically replace a non-blocker if the wreath becomes unreachable; a larger S-hook may not sit; a single sister clip does not complete a different pair; a fork becket is not equivalent to an eye. Code, size, terminals, orientation and series are reported. The removed piece remains identified for analysis, but it is not the only dime: if it was wrong, copying it would replicate the error. The official table closes the selection.

The final test checks closure and line without overloading
When finished, the gate or the wreath is opened several times, the sister clips are coupled and the S-hook remains in the scheduled seat during the download run. The traveller must move without the becket touching or shoving. The manoeuvre is then loaded only according to a safe and applicable procedure, observing the alignment, not improvising a breaking test. Any shot, partial opening or new sign stops testing and reopens diagnosis.
The first control after restoration is close
The photos of the new condition allow to compare gates, tips, couple of clips and becket after the first exits. Salt, polishing, movement of the fixed line and movement of the pins are sought. You do not expect the hook to jump to recognize a contact. The report records cause, replaced component and modification of geometry. If the defect reappears, the point is again discharged; periodic replacement is not transformed into a solution to a disallined manoeuvre.
An attack is closed when its function is verifiable
The diagnosis ends when it explains why the component opened, deformed or consumed. The gate must return, the wreath reach the expected position, the S-hook stay oriented, the sister clips be a compatible couple and the becket belong to the correct series. This distinction avoids the dangerous formula “it was just a little hard”. A quick attack returns reliable not because it has been forced, but because geometry, retention and maintenance have been restored and documented.
