The “Save” writing is not enough to understand if a device is the right one. Before leaving you must read category, size, marking, status and destination of use, then compare them to the distance from the coast and to the people really boarded. The updated table separates category 100 from 150 with a precise operating boundary: over six miles serves at least 150. An orderly checklist avoids the most common error, that is to find out too late that the gavone is full but the kit does not correspond to the chosen navigation.
First question: how long will the boat really sail?
Control starts from the path and not from the product. Marking “within twelve miles” in the program means checking the stretch further from the coast, not the average cruise or the distance of the port of arrival. If only one part of the transfer exceeds six miles, category 100 vests do not represent the minimum threshold for that navigation.
The same method applies when the plan changes. A coastal day can become a larger transfer for weather, alternative port or deviation. Before changing the route, it should be checked that the equipment is consistent with the new limit. The careful choice is to configure the boat for the most demanding use reasonably expected, avoiding frantic replacements on the eve of departure.

Second question: category 100 or category 150?
For all people on board, the minimum category 150 is required in unlimited navigation, within fifty miles and within twelve miles. The minimum category 100 covers navigation within six miles, within three miles, within one mile, within three hundred meters and in the internal waters. The distinction does not depend on the fact that the boat is marked CE: the matrix includes boats and ships with or without CE marking.
The number does not represent the size of the user. It is a performance class of the device. Admissible weight, conformation and closing systems should be read separately on the label. A 150 adult jacket does not solve the need for a model compatible with a child and a 100 well preserved does not become 150 because it appears voluminous.
Quick matrix for gavone control
| Voice | Within 6 miles and lower limits | Within 12 or 50 miles and without limit | Practical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum category | 100 | 150 | Read the label |
| Quantity | One for each person | One for each person | Count the boards |
| Automatic light mounted | Not indicated by the matrix for these limits | Forecast | Check fixing and useful life |
| Unit Identification | To check | To check | Sign or legible number |
| Size and fit | To check | To check | Dry test |
This matrix is used to prepare control, not to replace the conditions of the manufacturer or the additional rules related to particular uses. Rental, underwater activities and individual means require a dedicated reading. The weather-marine conditions can also make greater protection than the minimum threshold.
Third question: how many devices do you need?
The requirement refers to all people on board. The checklist must then report the actual number of adults and children for that departure. Counting the authorized seats of the unit is not enough: a boat enabled for ten people with seven people boarded must have at least seven usable vests, but the organization can keep others to maintain flexibility.
It is useful to divide the inventory into adults, boys and children, annoting the declared bands on the label. The generic word “universal” does not exempt from the control of fit. Belts to the limit, vest that climbs towards the face or unsuitable retention system are signals that the size is not correct.

Fourth question: is the light really mounted?
In the columns without limit, within fifty miles and within twelve miles the automatic activation light mounted on the vests appears. The word “mounted” is important: keeping a package of lights in the equipment compartment is not equivalent to having installed them on the individual devices. Each must be fixed in the expected position, without interfering with inflating, straps or cappuccia.
The control includes enclosure, contacts, date or stated duration and signs of oxidation. A test should not be carried out that it consumes or damages a disposable component if the manual does not provide it. The registration of the next verification avoids having to reconstruct the situation during the supply or just before leaving with the boat.
Fifth question: What should appear on the label?
The discipline recalls CE marking devices that comply with the applicable ISO standards, or produced with SOLAS MED marking, recognizable by the timoncino, in accordance with the relevant international requirements. The checklist should not be limited to a photo of the color or logo. You must be able to read class, model, manufacturer, conditions of use and indications related to size or mass of the user.
Historical circulars explain why some more dated products can bring back previous standards. This does not authorize automatic conclusions: suitability should be assessed on the date of entry, markings, efficiency and indications applicable to the individual specimen. If the label is erased or incomplete, technical verification cannot be based solely on the external aspect.

Sixth question: is the number of the unit present?
Individual means of rescue are identified with the acronym and registration number or with the registered number of the unit they belong to. The control must be inserted in the delivery of the boat, in the change of ownership and in the replacement of the kit. A marking referred to the previous owner or another unit indicates that the inventory was not updated.
The identification method should not damage the device. Before using markers, adhesive labels or engravings, read the manufacturer's instructions. The solution must remain legible, resist the marine environment and not compromise fabrics, inflatable room or seams.
Seventh question: foam and inflatable do you control the same?
No. An intrinsic floating model requires attention to deformations, crushing, lacerations, seams and contaminations. An inflatable adds cylinder, activation system, chamber, valves and indicators. In both cases initial compliance does not guarantee that the product remains efficient without maintenance.
On the inflatable it occurs that the cylinder is compatible, tightened as planned and without corrosion; that the mechanism indicator shows the correct state; that the room does not have abrasions or repairs outside the procedure. The revision follows intervals and modes indicated by the manufacturer. Disassembling the system by curiosity can generate a defect that previously did not exist.

Eighth question: Was the dry test done?
Dry proof is used to verify fit and understanding. Each person wears the device over the intended clothing, closes buckles and straps, adjusts any underwear and controls that the jacket cannot parade. The operation does not involve the activation of an inflatable and does not replace the technical tests provided by the manufacturer.
The times are also observed during the test. If the compartment is blocked by the fenders, if the sizes are mixed or if no one recognizes their model, the equipment is not ready. Assigning the vests before departure and showing the correct gesture reduces uncertainty when bridge and cockpit are moving.
Ninth question: when should it be worn without waiting?
In the night navigation in solitary the jacket must always be worn. Checklist must report this condition as a rule, not as optional advice. For boards, sail drifts, kitesurfing, water bikes and similar means, conductors and transported permanently wear an individual device with minimum performance category 50 and CE marking complies with the applicable standards.
The category 50 for such activities does not automatically replace the required 100 or 150 jackets in the ordinary configuration of the unit. These are different scenarios. For children on deck, tender, exposed maneuvers, sea size or reduced visibility, the commander can anticipate the obligation to wear on the basis of the concrete risk.

Tenth question: where are they raised?
The location must be dry, protected and accessible. Fuel, solvents, oils, batteries and edges can damage tissues and components. Also a prolonged compression under heavy equipment is to be avoided. The compartment has to open without moving half of the load and stay accessible with the unbanded boat or the busy cockpit.
A subdivision by size, accompanied by external labels, accelerates distribution. The already mounted lights and accessories must not be entangled during the extraction. If the vests are delivered to the guests at boarding, an alternative place should be provided to keep them without bringing them back to an unreachable gavone.
Eleven question: is there a maintenance register?
An essential sheet can report progressive number, brand, model, category, size, unit identification, date of purchase, last inspection and next inspection. For inflatables are added cylinders, activator and revision. The register does not create compliance alone, but prevents different products from being treated as if they have the same expiry or procedure.
The recommendations moulded on the product or indicated in the documentation must be respected. After activation, fall into water, contamination or damage, the device is isolated from the ready kit until it is restored correctly. A “to check” tire or tag prevents you from returning by mistake among those usable.

12th question: Are children and guests really covered?
For children control indicated mass, retention system, neck, closures and ease of recovery. Growth makes it necessary to test each season and not only after purchase. A too large device can slide upwards; too small one can not close properly over clothing.
Adult guests assign a size before leaving the port. Those with reduced mobility may need assistance in wearing and a specific recovery plan. The checklist must therefore contain names or positions, not only the total: “otto pieces” is less useful information of “a device verified for each of the eight people”.
Thirteenth question: is the used boat kit reliable?
In the passage of ownership each jacket is invented as a separate component. You read labels, category and size; lights, cylinders, activators, seams and identification occur. The fact that the devices were on board during the visit does not show that they are ready for the program of the new owner.
The delivery report should distinguish the accepted devices, those to be revised and those to be replaced. If history is unknown, a maintenance date should not be invented. It is preferable to record uncertainty and submit the product to the correct procedure before considering it part of the available equipment.

Checklist to be closed before leaving with the boat
The final verification always follows the same order: maximum distance from the coast, minimum category, people present, sizes, markings, number of the unit, automatic light when expected, integrity and maintenance. Then you check the vain position, assignment and briefing. Each variation of course or crew reopens at least the first three points.
The most useful conclusion is simple: there is no “boat jacket” valid in abstract. There is a device suitable for a person, installed and maintained for a certain navigation. When category, person and route coincide, administrative control and operational preparation tell the same thing. When they don't match, the full range only offers a false feeling of safety.
