The grab bag can be full and still not ready: just a dirty zip, a roll-top with a single fold or a radio buried under five litres of water. procedure must distinguish containers and promises. Explorer 2L and the Waterproof Packs Spinlock declare IPX7 in the described configurations; Explorer 35L uses a roll-top closure; the 15 and 25-litre compress pockets are spray-proof but the precise manufacturer does not protect in immersion. Checking means checking template, closing, content, mass and access, not just looking for holes.
Identifies each container and its performance
Read code, volume, type of closure and declaration. Record which packs are IPX7, which use roll-tops and which only serve to organize. Do not transfer the IPX7 value from Explorer 2L to Explorer 35L or to valve bags. The commercial waterproof word does not replace the model data. If label and documentation do not match, the container does not receive critical objects until it is identified. A photograph of the code helps the next control.
Empty on a clean surface and divide by function
Open a module at a time and store the content on a dry cloth. Separate communication, localization, light, medicine, thermal protection, water, food, tools and documents. Count what exists, not what appears in the old list. Unforeseen objects are evaluated before returning, because small accumulated extras increase mass and hide the essential. Always keep a personal level active during control, avoiding the entire equipment at the same time out of service.

TRU Zip must flow and seal according to instructions
Explorer 2L uses a self-repairing TRU waterproof and dustproof zip. Observe teeth or sealing surfaces, slider, end stroke and contamination. Perform care and maintenance indicated by the closing manufacturer, without oils or random fats. The cursor must complete the path without a load that pushes from the inside. Do not immerse the operating pack to try it. If the zip jumps, opens or fails, sensitive objects are transferred to a verified case.
The pressure lock must be complete
Small, medium and large waterproof packs use a press closure. Clean the closing line, align the edges and walk the whole length with your fingers. No belt or cord should be trapped. Openable loop, inner ring and external point for tether. The medium and large window must be integral and transparent. If the large packaging is wrapped on the belt, check that the fold does not forge the closure or cover a jacket command.
Roll-top requires space for regular folds
Explorer 35L and compressible pockets use roll-top. Spread the edge, remove sand and objects, expound the air without deforming the content and complete the number of rotations provided by the model. The buckles must close and maintain tension. A bag too full, with rigid objects near the edge, does not exceed control. Do not roll once to earn volume. The handle or belt should not transfer a shot that reopens the roll-top during transport.
The compression valve must work in one direction
In bags of 15 and 25 liters the valve removes air to reduce the footprint. Control body, fixing, cleaning and closing without disassembling unforeseen parts. Apply slowly to check the function, avoiding electronics, medicines or packaging that do not tolerate pressure. Remember the stated limit: these pockets do not offer waterproof diving protection. If the valve loses or remains open, the module can still arrange only after an evaluation, but does not receive sealing tasks.
The fabric also looks under straps and bottom
Search for holes, abrasions, delamination, lifting welds, discoloration, rigidity and contamination. Examine bottom, edges, attacks and areas covered by shoulder straps or passers. The fabric without PVC stated on some models does not change the inspection procedure. Do not apply patches or generic glues on a case to which IPX7 protection is attributed. A damage close to zip, valve or welding is particularly critical and requires appropriate replacement or service.
Internal chords and external points have different roles
The inner ring is used to hold small objects; the external point can fix the pack according to the allowed use. Check seams, predicted knots, carabiners and length. Radio, keys and beacons should not go out when the package opens, but the cord should not wrap the neck or prevent extraction. The external tether holds the container, not a person. Do not tie the grab bag to the wrist and do not use a small loop as a lifting point without specific declaration.
The personal pack should not interfere with the vest
Wear Explorer 2L or a Waterproof Pack in the planned position along with jacket, sling and wax. Control manual control, belt, HRS, cord and room opening. The pack must be accessible with one hand but do not hang on the security clip. Simula inflating only with teaching equipment or authorized procedure, not activating the operating device. If the placement interferes, moves the pack or reduces the content; the protection of objects cannot compromise that of the person.
Radio and beacon pass a separate control
Model, battery, expiry, registration, allowed autotest, antenna and accessories. The pack protects but does not operate an exhaust system. Keep commands and free antenna when extracted. A personal beacon must remain assigned and correctly mounted; a radio must turn on with the settings provided without transmitting false alarms. After the test returns to the same position, fixed to the inner cord if appropriate. Record the outcome out of the simple list of content.
Dissolved batteries are removed from the bag
Each spare cell is in isolation with type, quantity and expiry. Do not mix chemicals, brands, age or charge levels. Terminal protects and separates batteries from metal objects. If the container is compressed, choose an area that does not snap cells or devices. A waterproof envelope does not prevent short circuits and heat. It also controls the internal batteries of torches and radios for loss or corrosion; an oxidized replacement can contaminate the entire module.
Medicines and documents require update
Compare drugs, doses, allergies and dates with the current crew, respecting applicable health signs. Do not use the grab bag as a permanent storage of sensitive medicines at temperature. Documents and contacts are updated and protected in a separate envelope, with a separate copy. The pack window shows only an identification card, not personal information displayed. The sheets must remain legible with wet hands and contain brief instructions, not an administrative archive.
Water, food and thermal protection are rotated
Read deadlines, integrity and storage conditions. Search for inflated packs, leaks and edges capable of drilling the fabric. Distribute weight and keep the first objects accessible above the reserves. Replace each item before removing the old one, so the kit remains unfinished. The requirement is defined by the boat plane and the equipment of the raft, not copied from a generic list. Record mass and rotation date along with inventory.
The mass is measured after closing
It weighs every level and checks that the assigned person can lift it with vest and gloves. Shoulders, sternum straps and handles should be intact and regulated. Explorer 35L offers a sternal belt, but a capacity of 35 liters does not allow to fill up to the force limit of the crew. If the mass is excessive, divide content and responsibility. Note the weight on the board, because later additions may invalidate a test made months before.
External pockets and network do not host critical elements
The external zip pocket and the Explorer 35L side pocket improve organization and access, but are exposed to loss and environment. Assign them non-critical or temporary objects, without assuming the same protection as the main compartment. The outer elasticity does not hold an emergency radio. Check zip, mesh and bungee for tears and entanglements. Before abandonment, a quick external scan must confirm that nothing can fall during the shift to the raft.
Fixing on board must be free with a gesture
The bag must not fly with the disposition or remain trapped under other loads. Check location, hold, handle and exit. Try the release with a hand and gloves, without permanently removing the protection. The marking must be visible in the dark with the available light. Check a second route if fire or water make the main one inaccessible. The personal level remains worn just because no hold position can be reached in all scenarios.
Transport test finds bumps and busy hands
With a steady boat and a controlled environment, the crew travels the route assigned, keeps the bag attached to a second person. Do not launch the operating container in water. See if straps get implyed, the zip is pressed, the roll-top acts as improper grip or the weight requires two people. Repeat with reduced light. The procedure is correct until the bag arrives without compromising the balance and without requiring someone to unleash their safety cord.
The seal signals opening, does not replace control
A numbered seal or a weak tie may indicate that the module has been opened, as long as it breaks immediately in emergency and does not cross the waterproof closure. The number is recorded after each check. An integral seal does not test charged batteries, valid deadlines or lack of slow loss. Keep a verification calendar. After a partial use, the bag passes to a state not ready and is rebuilt by list, not closed counting objects by memory.
The procedure only closes with a coherent inventory
Compare quantity, location, test, deadlines, mass, container performance and assigned person. Photograph open and closed forms, update the register and confirm that each closure is completed. A missing object, an uncertain statement, a defective zip or a too full roll-top produce unready outcome. The grab bag is not a bag to forget: it is a composite, verifiable and distributed equipment, able to retain at least the essential functions even when the main module is lost.
