A winch may look perfect because it turns and shines, while a superimposed spire, a dirty jaw or a base that moves are already preparing the problem. The manual series Andersen Full Stainless ranges from 12ST to 72ST. This analysis translates the characteristics stated in concrete controls to be performed before, during and after the maneuver, maintaining separate observation, use and maintenance.
First rule: identify the installed model
You read the code and register the size, without deducting them from the apparent diameter. The range includes 12, 18, 28, 34, 40, 46, 50, 52, 58, 62, 68 and 72. The 12ST and 18ST are at a speed; from 28ST the manual versions considered are at two speeds. Drawing, spare parts and procedure must belong to that precise unit. A similar manual does not become correct by similarity.
Stop boat control before loading
The bell must rotate freely, without scratching or swinging. Base, rings, self-tailing arm, jaws and handle attachment are observed. Salt, sand, fiber, extraneous oxidation and traces of water are annotated and removed with compatible methods. Dice and counterplate under deck should not show movement or infiltration. If a change in the previous control appears, the winch remains unloaded until diagnosis.

The top must be verified by diameter and state
Adjustable jaws accept different diameters within the limits of the model, but not every top available on board. They control diameter, construction, rigidity, flattening, heat polishing and broken fibers. A contaminated shell changes friction and behavior. Self-tailer adjustment is carried out without load following documentation. You do not force an oversized top and you do not consider it too thin just because it enters the throat.

The winding direction does not improvise
The top must wrap in the intended direction and rise from the bottom of the bell to the self-tailer. Before applying force occurs the arrival from the referral, the absence of twists and the space for the tail. A reverse winding or too high input can produce overlaps. The hand that accompanies the tail stays away from the charged edges and never attempts to correct an inactivation while the winch is under tension.
Power Rib does not eliminate the need for correct edges
The Power Rib profile is designed to offer controlled grip in recovery and release; the polished vertical surface favours the rise of the coils with less vertical friction. The behaviour however depends on top, load and conditions. It adopts the number of turns indicated for the maneuver and increases it or reduces it only with conscious procedure. If the top slips, it does not tighten with bare hands on the bell: it is discharged and the cause is identified.

Spires must be ordered and separated
During the recovery it is observed that every ride sails without riding the upper one. A overlap can tighten the top and block the possibility of spinning it. When an accumulation occurs, the force stops before the load grows. The operator does not insert fingers or tools between turns. The solution is done by downloading the manoeuvre with a planned method and with clear communication between the helmsman and the schooner.
The self-tailer holds, the operator controls
The top enters the jaws and is oriented by the arm. It is checked that it is sitting correctly and that the tail goes out towards a free area. On the 40ST models and the larger the arm can rotate 360 degrees: the orientation is to be fixed empty to avoid interference. Self-tailer is not used as a justification to abandon a loaded maneuver. Who works must see bell, referral and exit zone.

A speed requires a consistent rhythm
12ST and 18ST have a unique relationship. On 12ST the manufacturer declares gear ratio 1.3:1 and power ratio 9.5:1. The operator recovers the lasco without tears and reduces the rhythm when it increases the resistance. If you need a disproportionate effort, you control the sail trim, rivii and top; you do not stretch the handle and you do not add a second person on the same lever.
Two speeds must be tested before the emergency
From 28ST the manual series examined uses two speeds obtained by changing the sense of the handle. The sequence must be known to the whole crew. On 28ST gear ratios 1,3:1 and 4,0:1 are declared, with power ratios 9.5:1 and 28,6:1. At the port, the transition to light load occurs, verifying that the graft, sound and resistance are net. An uncertain change requires inspection.

The handle must enter, lock and exit
Attack and restraint mechanism must be cleaned. The compatible handle is inserted and checked before loading; at the end it is removed and raised. You don't leave it on the winch during indoor passages. The complete rotation must be free from tools, tientibenes and people. Gloves and position of the body are tested in advance, because an obstacle that seems marginal to a steady boat becomes critical with disposition and wave.
The base tells what happens under the blanket
Any movement between winch and blanket signals a problem. Sealant cracks, fingerprints, deformations and water are observed. Below deck you control dice, washers and counterplate without locking automatically: a variation requires comparison with the procedure and verification of the structure. The simple increase of the pair can compress a damaged sandwich. Date and result enter the register, with photo if a new sign appears.

316 polished steel does not mean zero maintenance
Bell, jaws, rings, transmission shaft and stripper arm are declared in polished grade 316 stainless steel. Iron salt and contaminants can still stain or alter surfaces. After use, rinse according to the applicable indications, avoiding abrasives and non-compatible products. External washing does not replace internal maintenance and should not push dirt or aggressive substances in bearings.
Rumor and play are data, not impressions
The system uses steel roller and ball bearings to transfer the bell loads to the central stem limiting friction losses. A new noise, a hard point, an irregular return or side game are compared with the recorded condition. It does not apply lubricant from the outside to hide the symptom. The winch is downloaded and opened only by the appropriate procedure, space and capacity.

Two-year maintenance is a reference, not a guarantee
For normal use the manufacturer indicates an intervention approximately every two years. Intense salt water, regatta, sand, long inactivity or symptoms anticipate the expiration. The range is based on calendar and conditions. Cracks and springs are built to remain held during disassembly, facilitating service, but small parts and sequences require order. Spare parts and fat are used for the identified model.
The disassembly starts from a prepared bench
Before opening you completely download the top, you remove the handle and you prevent the use of the post. Progressive photos, numbered containers and clean surface reduce errors. You do not mix pieces between twin winchs without having verified its identity. Wear, deposits and orientation are documented. If a phase does not correspond to the official procedure, the work stops: to force a bell or a screw can create a damage not immediately visible.

The test after service proceeds by levels
The reassembly is followed by manual vacuum rotation, handle test in the intended directions, self-tailer control and fixation verification. Only later is a top with load contained in a controlled environment. You see lifts, sockets, speed change and release. Nobody keeps their hands close to the spires. A positive outcome is recorded; an anomaly immediately reports the system to the non-operative state.
Control changes after a long period of inactivity
A boat remained firm does not leave the assumption that the winch is in the same conditions as the last exit. They seek crystallized salt, dust, stiffening of the top, infiltration and movements of the base. Vacuum rotation is compared between twin units without considering the difference a definitive diagnosis. Before a challenging maneuver you perform a progressive test in port. If the service interval has expired or unknown, the remittance in use will not remove it.
A new top requires a new test
Nominal diameter equals does not guarantee the same behavior: construction, stocking, rigidity and surface treatment change grip and lift. After replacement, the housing in the jaws occurs and the low-loaded coils are observed. Self-tailer adjustment follows the limits of the model. The first exit is considered part of the testing and the crew keeps margin to stop. Pressing or sliding signs are documented before continuing to use the new top.
Deliveries and guests require a demonstration
Those who climb on board must know about winding, use of the handle, change of speed and stop command. The explanation takes place at unloaded winchs and includes what should not be done: hands between the edges, attempts to free an overlap under load and left handle. In maneuvers with more people, he assigns who turns, who controls the tail and who coordinates with the helmsman. Short and agreed words reduce ambiguity when wind and noise increase.
The pre-exit procedure must be short and repeatable
Known model, firm base, free bell, efficient handle, integral top, clean path, operating jaws and free tail: these controls must be completed without selective memory. The board assigns a manager and distinguishes the defects that prohibit use from the observations to be monitored. In maneuver one voice coordinates load and release. Speed does not compensate for uncertainty: if something does not appear normal, it stops before multiplying force.
Security comes from the possibility of saying stop
An efficient Andersen Full Stainless makes the work smooth, but polishing does not show what happens in the enclosures or under the base. The real verification is predictability: the top salt ordered, the change is net, the self-tailer retains and the load can be reduced in a controlled way. Training, register and maintenance transform these conditions into a routine. When only one answer is missing, the winch is not “proven better” under load: it is checked.
